SEL (Social Emotional Learning)
What is Social-Emotional Learning or SEL?
According to CASEL, a leading organization in the SEL movement, social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which adolescent and young children acquire and apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions/stress, achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and constructive/caring decisions. SEL advances educational equity and excellence through authentic school-family-community partnerships to establish environments conducive to progressive learning. SEL also promotes experiences that feature trusting and collaborative relationships, rigorous and meaningful curriculum and instruction, and ongoing evaluation. SEL can help address various forms of inequity and empower youth and school leaders to co-create thriving schools and contribute to safe, healthy, and just communities. The foundational framework of CASEL's social/emotional learning include five competencies that help establish curricula for development of practices in SEL.
Arthur F. Smith Middle Magnet School is committed to promoting and developing skills within the SEL framework through our various resources and programs outlined through our MTSS framework.
